Chris Thomas FIoR

Chris Thomas is a Fellow of the Institute of Roofing, and has a wealth of roofing knowledge and experience from more than 35 years of work in the construction industry.

Since 2001 Chris has launched, run and developed the Tiled Roofing Consultancy from an idea to one of the major consultancies that specialises in slated and tiled pitch roof coverings and their associated components. He has specialised in the investigation of all types of roofing failures and undertaken over 150 investigations related to leaks, wind damage, deterioration, condensation, noise and detailing.

Chris consults with component manufacturers, has undertaken expert witness work, written over 100 technical magazine articles and taught Roofing Management and Technician students. He has been Chair and Secretary of the local regional branch of the Institute of Roofing and presented on roofing to an international conference.

Chris infoFor 14 years prior to opening the Tiled Roofing Consultancy, Chris was the Field Technical Manager for Redland Roofing Systems/Lafarge Roofing, responsible for ensuring the design of its roofing products. Advice and technical services were of the highest standard. He helped prepare BS5534, the Code of Practice for Slating and Tiling: Design and BS5250, the Code of Practice for the Control of Condensation in Buildings and BRE Digest 467: “Slate and tile roofs: avoiding damage from aircraft wake vortices”. Chris was also responsible for the design of some of the hundreds of components produced and sold by Redland/Lafarge and he helped develop many more. He was also involved with the installation of the first fully integrated Redland/Lafarge PV solar panel systems installed in the UK.

Chris co-authored the definitive book on vertical tiling for the Clay Roof Tile Council, contributed many technical articles to journals.
Over the years Chris has spoken to many thousands of professionals on pitched roofing issues, as part of their Continuous Professional Development programme, and also undertook training modules at the Roofing Training centre.

Prior to joining Redland Roofing Systems, Chris worked as a Building Surveyor and Architectural technician for a Local Authority Housing Department, a Health Authority, a Housing Association, an Insurance company, as well as Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Structural Engineers
